The parade began at Hanoi\u2019s national stadium Sunday morning, and ended about six miles away at Hanoi Botanical Gardens. Tam Nguyen, Vietnam Pride\u2019s main organizer, said in an interview to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gaystarnews.com\/article\/video-shows-first-ever-vietnam-pride060812\">Gay Star News<\/a>\u00a0that, \u201cthe most important thing about Pride is that you send out the message to the public that the gay community exists.\u201d Demonstrators trailed rainbow-colored streamers and shouted, \u201cEqual rights for gays and lesbians!\u201d and \u201cWe support same-sex marriage!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a scene that was unimaginable a few years ago, when Vietnam still labeled homosexuality a \u201csocial evil,\u201d alongside drug addiction and prostitution. The country\u2019s gay community was once so underground that few groups or meeting places existed, and it was taboo to even talk about the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam\u2019s state-controlled media now explores gay issues, and the Justice Ministry recently proposed including same-sex couples in its overhaul of the country\u2019s marriage law \u2013 positioning Vietnam to be the first country in Asia to allow same-sex couples to marry or legally register.
